Aurora Learning Management Platform

Aurora Education Group

The Challenge

Aurora Education Group needed to replace their aging learning management system serving 340 educational institutions and 1.2 million students. The legacy platform suffered from poor performance during peak hours, lacked modern accessibility standards, could not support interactive content types, and required extensive manual effort for course management. Faculty adoption was declining due to usability issues, and student satisfaction scores related to the digital learning experience were at an all-time low.

Our Solution

MISALE designed and built a modern learning management platform from the ground up. The frontend was built with Svelte for responsive interactivity, the backend with Node.js and PostgreSQL for robust content management, and the infrastructure deployed across AWS with auto-scaling to handle enrollment surges. We implemented real-time collaborative features, WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility compliance, an intuitive course builder for faculty, and a mobile-first student experience with offline content access.

Results & Impact

Page load performance improved by 380% across all device types

Faculty course creation time reduced by 65% with the new builder

Student satisfaction scores increased from 3.1 to 4.6 out of 5

Platform handles 850K concurrent users during peak enrollment

Full WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility compliance achieved

The platform MISALE built has transformed our digital learning experience. Faculty love the course builder, students love the interface, and our IT team loves that it scales without intervention. It's rare for a technology project to make everyone happy.

Project Deep Dive

Education technology occupies a unique position — the end users range from tech-savvy students to faculty members who may have limited technical comfort. The platform must be powerful enough for complex course design while intuitive enough for first-time users.

Intuitive Course Builder

The course builder was designed through extensive co-creation with faculty members from twelve institutions. We conducted usability studies at every stage of development, iterating on the interface until faculty could create a fully structured course in under thirty minutes without training.

The builder supports drag-and-drop content organization, inline rich text editing, multimedia embedding, assessment creation with automatic grading, and prerequisite logic for content sequencing. Templates provide starting points for common course structures while allowing complete customization.

Real-Time Collaboration

The platform includes real-time collaborative features powered by WebSocket connections — live discussion boards, collaborative document editing, and synchronized group activities. These features were designed to support both synchronous and asynchronous learning models, critical for institutions serving diverse student populations across multiple time zones.

Offline-First Mobile Experience

Recognizing that many students access learning materials from areas with unreliable connectivity, we built an offline-first mobile experience. Course content is cached locally using service workers, assignments can be completed offline and synchronized when connectivity resumes, and the interface remains fully functional without an active network connection.
