But the default starting point for most enterprise AI projects should now be foundation models, with custom training reserved for scenarios where it provides a measurable advantage.

The most successful organizational model for enterprise AI is a centralized platform team that provides infrastructure, tools, and governance, combined with distributed ML engineers embedded within business domains. The platform team ensures consistency, quality, and operational excellence. The domain teams ensure relevance, speed, and business alignment.
This model avoids both the bottleneck of fully centralized AI teams and the chaos of fully decentralized experimentation.
Executive Sponsorship With Technical Depth
AI initiatives that succeed have executive sponsors who understand both the potential and the limitations of the technology. Sponsors who expect magic are as dangerous as sponsors who are skeptical of any investment. The ideal sponsor is curious, technically literate, willing to invest in foundations, and patient enough to allow the compound returns of AI investment to materialize over quarters rather than weeks.
Measuring What Matters
The success of enterprise AI should be measured in business terms: revenue generated, costs avoided, decisions improved, time saved. Model accuracy is a means to these ends, not an end in itself. Organizations that fixate on technical metrics while neglecting business impact will build impressive systems that nobody uses.
